The Carter-Mondale Administration “Untold Stories” Project is designed to collect recollections/stories from as many former Carter-Mondale Administration officials as possible to develop a complete historical record of the administration. After some curation, these stories could be used for a potential book, made available digitally and/or in the Carter Presidential Archives.
To our knowledge, no previous presidential administration has attempted to collect recollections from such a wide range of officials. These can include both humorous and serious recollections, anecdotes, and accounts that help to underscore our administration’s successes and setbacks.
The plan is to organize these stories according to policy issues and particularly notable events (e.g., the 1976 campaign and transition, the 1980 campaign, etc.). We want to show how decisions are made in an administration, the tradeoffs, the pressures that influenced us as we made decisions, and the negotiations in which we engaged both within the administration, with interest groups, and with Congress during our work.
